Every president except George Washington has called the White House and its surrounding grounds his place of work, rest, and solitude. Recognizable the world around, the White House stands as a symbol of democracy. The White House and its park grounds serve not only as the seat of the executive branch of government of the United States of America, but also as an iconic place for civil discourse. http://www.nps.gov/whho/index.htm Franklin Pierce was the first president to introduce the Christmas tree to the White House in 1856 for a group of Washington Sunday School children. In 1932, there was a “Singing Tree". Loudspeakers hidden in the tree were connected to a Victrola which was stationed in a police booth, playing carols. This created the effect of carols emerging from the tree. Park Police changed the records from 6 until 10 pm from Christmas Eve until New Year's.
