The young German cellist Leonard Elschenbroich has rapidly made a name for himself as one of the most exciting and gifted cellists of his generation. His many awards include the Leonard Bernstein Award Borletti-Buitoni Trust Award and the Firmenich Prize of the Verbier Festival. On this new release Elschenbroich teams up with one of his regular chamber music collaborators pianist Alexei Grynyuk. Together they perform Rachmaninov s passionate Cello Sonata and arrangement of Shostakovich s Viola Sonata made by Daniil Shafran with Shostakovich s blessing. In the sonata Shostakovich alludes to several of his previous works from the Suite for two pianos to the opening movement of his Symphony No.14.
